Police arrested over Kenyan brew

Four police officers have been arrested in central Kenya after allegations that they distributed deadly home-made alcohol, which killed one person. The alcohol, known locally as "changaa", had been seized by the police and was being held as evidence.

It was allegedly given to market traders as an inducement to take part in an identity parade.

Many Kenyans drink home-made alcohol. Last month, 48 people died after methanol was added to a batch.

A full investigation has been launched, said police spokesman Jaspher Ombati.

The Daily Nation newspaper reports that police in Ol Kalou often gave cash inducements for people to take part in identity parades and identify suspected robbers.

But instead of money, on this occasion, nine people were allegedly given some changaa.

A street hawker died after drinking three glasses of the brew, while two others went to hospital.

Mr Ombati said it was wrong for the police to pay people to take part in identity parades.
