Private sector development: A small-business modelKC,
I am a kenyan-trained Civil Engineer currently studying for an MBA in th US and majoring in entrepreneurship. I am developing a business plan to create a "business incubator" for small businesses - the jua kali sector is an area of focus. In addition to technical and operations skills that Swaleh mentions, entrepreneurial skills (e.g. marketing and access/attracting capital, etc) can expand this sector allowing for exports.
Can we collaborate? Tell me more about your vision.

Jua Kali
Hello KC,
I am a Kenyan Mechanical Design Engineer based in Nairobi. I am working with an NGO dealing with appropriate technology products which are basically Jua Kali in nature, although they look superior because of the production processes we use.
We are employing mass production techniques to mass produce our products. The mass production techniques ensure high standards of quality, uniformity of product, interchangeability and economies of scale which are the major challenges to the jua kali.
Currently, am working on a small course on mass production techniques to be taught to the jua kali people to equip them with basic knowledge on the design of jigs and fixtures for mass production.
I think we can do something to help kenya industrialise by improving the informal jua kali sector.
Just come by this forum this day and was impressed by your suggestions which I share them before.
What is your feedbak on this.
If I can have your email address will be good.
Best Regards

Implementing quality standards in Jua Kali sector
I am a Kenyan researcher based in UK. I am looking for individual, NGOs, government departments or university to work with in order to implement quality standard in Jua Kali sector. I believe this is one concept tha has a lot of potential to compete globally if only we can improve the products that come out of it. I am sure if we can attain the standards, firms such as Microsoft, Coca colas, IKEA, Wallmart and others will guarantee us market.
We need to do this and train them at same time to copy ideas, much like what the Chinese and the Indians have done in the recent years.
I have no money for this but it will be a voluntary thing …for the sake our nation. I must add that it is my belief that to attain these standards, all we need to do is a bit of training and more of changing the attitudes of Kenyans.
I would like to work with lecturers particularly those at the polytechnics and universities to start courses geared towards Jua kali technology. If there are such individual, please…………..please let us do something. We can change this country forever. |
