The Nairobi Basic Needs basket

Cost of a Basic Needs basket in Fourteen Informal Settlements, Nairobi - Kenya, 2005

by Mugo Phares Kirii, JESUIT HAKIMANI CENTRE

Fourteen slum dwellers in Nairobi gathered evidence of the cost of living in their neighbourhoods every month in 2005. Their data were computed and analysed by Mugo Phares Kirii (MA Economics, University of Nairobi).
The finding explore the expenditure patterns in households of four members and establish food poverty levels and overall poverty levels in Nairobi's informal settlements.
In certain areas, up to 90% of the households lived below the food poverty line estimated at Ksh 4,032.18 per month. Over halg of these households lived below the absolute poverty line estimated at Ksh 9,678.32 per month.
The study also touches on the plight of urban residents in terms of water, housing, transport and health.

Can the Bible change the slums in Africa?

by Fritz Stenger (Ed.) - Faith and Society Series n. 13 - Paulines Publications Africa - Nairobi (Kenya)

This book is the outcome of the project "The Bible on the Ground" in Christ the King Parish, Nairobi. Written by people from the slums, it shows how the Bible can assist not only slum dwellers, but all who try to follow Christ, to cope with daily life and to improve their living conditions in the spirit of Christ and the Gospel.

Jesus, like the prophets of old, showed his love for like and for the people. But like these prophets, he was shocked by those who did not care for others and lived only for profit.

thoush based on a particular situation, this book can be of inspiration for all those who work in difficult situations.
