Children and Youth Ministry

Today's youth are tomorrow's leaders and people. This is why it is so important to address their concerns and help them to grow at the service of the community.and to be agents of transformation in the Church and society.

The Youth Ministry takes care of youth and adolescents, procuring cultural animation and preventive action in collaboration with the small christian community, and parents.

Those in charge of Youth Ministry work with the youth organizing activities and informal education in order to prevent them from being on the street. Through yourh and cultural centres they organize programs that include: art, music, health, poverty alleviation, sports and leisure, environment, literacy, human promotion, leadership, self-reliance, etc.

The youth ministry helps the youth to be integrated in the small christian communities (scc) and in the Church, and the formation they receive makes them useful Christian citizens.

The Church needs to respond to the expectations of young people. Jesus wants to enter into dialogue with them and to propose a commitment of their lives to transform the world. As Jesus with the disciples of Emmaus, so the church must become the travelling companion of young people..." (Pope John Paul II, World Youth Day 1995, Philippines). This is what is meant by youth ministry. We need the commitment of the whole Christian community and its leaders to journey with young people as they come to grips with with the Good News and respond in discipleship.

The Cultural Department works with the youth of Kibera on three different areas:

  • Youth groups. Each subparish has a representative of the youth in the council. They help in the evangelization of the subparish. There are a number of youth groups in the parish: Bakita Bakanga; Don bosco; San Comboni; Saint Veronica. There is also a drama group that works in relation with other churches.
  • Sports. Every year there are three competions on different sports between the different subparishes. The sports practiced are: volley-ball; football; netball; basket-ball. There are also karate and boxing clubs.
  • Choirs. There are 6 choirs in the parish. There is also a music school for teachers of choirs and training every three months.
